Crown Care

Caring for Your Crown Restoration

This crown is custom-made for you and requires special care and maintenance to increase its longevity.

  • Keep it clean! Brush it (and all your other teeth) 2-3 times per day and floss daily. Any plaque that sits on the edges of your new custom restoration will dissolve healthy tooth structure underneath, weaken the cement, and result in the early loss of your restoration. Investing in an electric toothbrush is an excellent idea as it is proven to remove plaque bacteria better than a manual toothbrush.
  • You may notice that the “bite” feels off. Keep in mind that it is something new in your mouth and may take some time to get used to. However, if it still feels off after 2 days, please call the office to have an adjustment. You may notice tooth sensitivity or jaw pain and tenderness if the crown needs adjustment.
  • If you had local anesthetic on the day of your treatment, it will take about 3 hours to wear off completely. Be careful not to bite or burn yourself until it wears off.
  • Your gums will be tender for a few days, from the cement cleaning process. You may notice bleeding during flossing. Continue flossing and bleeding should stop within 3-4 days.
  • Investing in a custom-made bite guard is recommended to protect your new crown as well as all your other teeth. You will benefit from wearing a bite guard if you have experienced any of the following symptoms: chipped front teeth, flat or worn edges on teeth, broken teeth or fillings, sore jaw muscles, morning headaches or neck aches, sensitive teeth or gum recession. The bite guard will prevent you from placing excessive clenching forces on your teeth and your new crown while you sleep.
